The largest showcase for smooth jazz, the highly successful Catalina Island Jazz Festival concluded this past week. It was interesting to me that it was the 90th anniversary of the opening of the event venue the  Avalon Casino. The Count Basie Orchestra and Gordon Godwin’s Big Fat Band played the event in remembrance that in the 1930’s and 1940’s big band concerts were broadcast from their by CBS Radio to the entire country. With the lack of technology back then this was accomplished by laying a cable under the ocean to Los Angeles.

I have new releases from Brian Culbertson, David Benoit, Rick Braun, Joyce Cooling, Herb Alpert, Julian Vaughn, Craig, Sharmat, and Kim Scott.

Playing the Billboard top three in smooth jazz in the middle of the first hour.

The second hour is devoted to the classics of smooth jazz.

Our classic among classics segment travels back forty years to 1979 to play an early song from an immensely popular smooth jazz group Spyro Gyra. They are still active and will be releasing a new album that I will be playing next week.

Thank you for your continuing support of this program and KKRN.
