This is a special episode of Bending the Arc. The first hour consists of a conversation with Redding Police Department’s Chief Brian Barner that was recorded prior to the release of a Critical Incident video, the first to use body camera footage to document a shooting of a civilian by a police officer. The Chief graciously agreed to a follow-up conversation where we were able to pose specific questions about the incident. That conversation follows the first hour and is approximately a half hour in length. We are grateful to the Chief, his team, and the KKRN Program committee for accommodating this expanded "coverage".
About the Chief:
Chief Brian Barner oversees a Department of 122 sworn and 63 non-sworn personnel, with an annual budget of approximately $42 million. During our conversation he speaks about his history with RPD beginning in 1992 as a Police Explorer. Over the past 26 years with the Department, he has supervised all the Divisions and/or specialty units within Department.
Brian has a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Southern Oregon University, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from National University, is a Leadership Redding graduate, and graduate of the California Police Chiefs Association Executive Development Course. Brian has been married for 22 years to his wife Alysha. They have two sons, ages 15 and 19.
