In the first half of this episode, we hold a conversation with Larry Olmstead, President and CEO of United Way of California and a member of the Shasta Equal Justice Coalition's Steering Committee. We discuss the formation of the SEJC, his deep involvement in diversity, equity and inclusion work and United Way Worldwide's equity focus, and current efforts to work for fair and equal justice in our county. In the second half, we hear from Tom O'Mara, a community leader who has been involved in efforts ranging from organizing Not in Our Town efforts, to Youth Violence Prevention, Safe School Plan Training, and serving as Civil Rights Advocate for the Redding Police Department. We discuss those efforts, the idea of a Human Rights Council, the role of local and national organizations that support such efforts, including the California Association of Human Relations and Human Rights Organizations, and the California Education Code that requires the development of Comprehensive School Safety Plans to respond to a range of issues including disasters, hate crimes, harassment, and active intruders.
